Can You Use a Purple Mattress on a Murphy Bed?

Unfortunately, Purple does not recommend using any of their mattresses with a Murphy Bed. This is due to the weight and design of their mattresses. Most of them are too heavy and thick to be used with a wall bed properly.

As a result you might not be able to close the bed properly, plus it might exceed the weight limit.

For example, the Hults Murphy Bed (shown below) can hold a mattress that is up to 10 inches deep and weights up to 60 lbs (in full size) and 70 lbs (in queen size).

Here is a list of Purple’s mattresses with their height and weight:

  • The Purple NewDay Mattress is 8 inches high and weights 75 lbs full size and 88 lbs queen size.
  • The Purple Original Mattress is 9.25 inches high and weight 92 lbs full size and 109 lbs queen size.
  • The Purple Plus Mattress is 11 inches high and weights 92 lbs full size and 109 lbs queen size.
  • The Purple Restore Mattress is 11.5 inches high and weights 98 lbs full size and 114 lbs queen size.

The Purple Rejuvenate Mattress collection is even thicker and heavier. It’s between 15.5-18.5 inches high and weights 126-202 lbs for the queen size.

Purple mattress can work with different types of bed frames, such as a platform bed, upholstered bed and even adjustable bed frames. But they are not compatible with Murphy beds and box springs.

GelFlex Grid Layer in Purple Mattresses

Another reason for the non-compatibility might be the fact that all Purple mattresses have a 2 or 3 inch layer of GelFlex Grid.

Purple has over 30 patents for cushioning technology, and they have developed the Grid from their proprietary GelFlex polymer. It has repeating geometric structure, which allows it to provide cushioned comfort. It is designed to be soft and supportive and to adapt to a person’s body as they move.

However, since mattresses in Murphy beds are positioned in a vertical position when not in use, this could effect the shape of the GelFlex Grid layer. The material might not perform as well or it could sag if it is placed in a vertical position for a very long time.
